Need new hardware at work

Big things at work the other day, I am in the middle of moving the Ford Retail Intranet site up to York data centre from their old Dagenham data centre. Well the server the intranet currently works on is a very old server, not powerful enough for running any of the web applications that I have built. Some of them deal with phrasing logs etc and need a fast powerful machine to get them done quickly.

When building these applications they have been put on a server in York which is our backup ISA server that was pulled out of a scrap heap. But funny enough it’s the most powerful server I think we have LOL. Well anyway part of this move up to York for the intranet I am trying to push for a powerful web server. Well Roley is also trying to push for new hard ware too. I proper 6TB NAS unit, Load Balancers, layer 7 switches, new ISA servers and new Domain Controllers. The hardware we have currently got is falling apart. So together we are teaming up to get the hardware we want :) As ever it’s all about getting approval to spend the money. We are looking at £30,000 for the lot. Not a lot compared to what the business want to put in which I can’t explain right now.

Head down and get on

Ok we have today of at university but I’ve decided to still go in. I will use this time to do some more work to get ahead and get everything out of the way.

When finishing college at York I said to myself that If I go to University I wouldn’t let it be like at college. At college I got into the habit of leaving everything to last minute and any spare time was wasted on doing nothing. I think everyone on the college course were the same? Put it this way there was 12 of us at the beginning of the course and only 2 of us got a grade at the end of it. Even my friend Dan didn’t make the grade. But not to worry, while I took the year out he went back to college to get his grade and now he is at Sheffield University

So anyway where am I with assignments?? Well the C programming assignment that is 22 questions I have already completed that. Now that was very easy but the rest that haven’t done any programming before are finding it hard. We have an advanced computer applications lesson which I’m doing well in that too. We have the first assignment that is worth 25% and already got half way through that. Next we have maths and we have 5 assignments to complete by Christmas. Well I have completed 2 of them so far and well into my 3rd. Felling quite proud of myself.

Teacher lost the passion

University seems like a joke so far. Today in computer principles the teacher tried to describe to us the difference between ROM and RAM. Ether he had no clue what he was talking about or couldn’t come up with an example. Well this is how he tried to describe them. Yes he got it right that ROM is read only and RAM is read and write. But then he was saying when you receive emails they are stored in ROM because you can’t change the contents. Now there are few reasons why he was wrong. One ROM is READ ONLY. You cannot write to it. So when you receive an email there is no way it is written to ROM. It is stored on your computer HDD. Secondly he was saying that you can not modify the contents of that email. Well yes you can. For example if you receive the email in IMAP format you can simply open the file in notepad and change the contents and save. That way you can pretend that you received an email from some one with a nasty message etc.

Well it isn’t only just that teacher they all seem as incompetent as the next. You would think after 20 years of teaching the same course you would be more organized than you started and more clued up on what you are teaching.

I hate these kinds of teachers that use to do what they teach for a job. It seems that they have lost the passion for what they do and decided to go into teaching. This lack of passion shows in the classroom to. The only teachers I look up to are those that wanted to be teachers right from the beginning. You know those ones that are like “I want to be a teacher when I grow up mummy.”

Diaries are for girls

Part of our university course we have to keep what’s called a reflective diary. Basically write down all achievements, thoughts and learning’s regarding electronics. We were advised by the teacher that it’s better to buy an a4 kind of diary to place all these in. That way it can be easily submitted to be checked on a 2 weekly basis. Well anyway no matter where I go to try and find one of these diaries they are all covered in flowery patterns for girls. YUK!!!

It seems that these companies think that the only people that buy diaries are girls. Now that’s just sexist!!

No Water Proofs

My search for water proof trousers this morning has failed. All I could find was some cheap ones for just £10. As they say you get what you pay for so I will keep looking for some better ones.

Anyway im on the train now. It’s amazing how many trains out from York go through Lees. It’s great I can just jump on about any train. There must be a train ever 20 minutes to Leeds from York.

I also thought Id put Skye on my phone today. Because there is free WIFI in Leeds met university then it’s cheaper for me to make calls through Skye than using my pass as you go tariff on Orange. I really should change my provider as my phone is now unlocked to any network. Thing is I’ve had this number for so long I don’t like the idea of changing it. And if I want to move this number to another provider it would have to be contract and it could take up to 4 weeks for the transfer of a number. I can’t wait that long
